New Moon in Cancer

I break down why this is the *best new moon of the year* and how to make the most of it.

Today we are blessed with the most powerful new moon of the year- a restorative, nurturing new moon in Cancer. While the intentions that we set today meet fertile waters, they might ripen in a non-linear and emotional way.

Why is this new moon so powerful?

In Cancer, the Moon is in its most empowered position to manifest spirit or intention into form, and to protect and nurture that form to its fruition.

The Moon "rules" and thus is at its strongest in sensitive and changeable Cancer. When a planet or luminary is in the sign that it rules, it is powered up. As if the planet is at home (a.k.a. "in domicile"), it is capable of fulfilling its responsibilities with the most ease.

Cancer is also a cardinal (or initiatory) sign, which further supports the ability of the moon to bring the spirit of our intentions into the material world. Represented by the primordial waters from which all life emerged, in fertile Cancer "life finds a way".

But here's the thing.

If you want to swim in the fecund oceans of Cancer, it's advised that you plan for a circuitous path and the ups-and-downs of emotional tides.

Do your plans for your future include experiencing a full range of emotion as you reach your goals?

Spiraling

Sometimes we imagine that the path to our dreams will work out in a linear and expected way. However, the back-and-forth and spiraling movement of Cancer, the crab, reminds us that the path to what we want isn't always the straightforward and non-emotional one that we envision.

Cancer teaches us that there are emotional lessons and journeys that can only be walked in a spiral, meeting the lesson again and again until we fully understand it.

Yet, there is another dimension to the Cancer spiral. Archetypally, Cancer can have the tendency to be swamped by emotions and descend into a negativity/doom spiral.

What area(s) of your life or situations cause you to spiral out?

This new moon, set an intention to notice when that pattern is arising and respond in a nurturing way to yourself.

I recommend setting aside a few minutes to clear your mind, close your eyes and meet the dark void of the moon. Pay attention to whatever images, thoughts, and feelings arise and attend to them as you craft your intentions, write in your journal, or brainstorm what comes next.

As a cardinal water sign, Cancer initiates emotional experiences, but has the tendency to close off to protect itself from being overloaded by emotions.
